Clean Sheet Bet Explained
Quick Summary
- A clean sheet means a team concedes no goals in the match.
- The market asks whether a team keeps one, or lets in at least one goal.
- Own goals count against the defending team, and abandoned matches may void the bet.
- We name no matches or predictions. Check the sportsbook on KKFB.
If you follow football, you have heard commentators celebrate a clean sheet as if it were a trophy. For goalkeepers and defenders, it nearly is. Sportsbooks turn it into a market. In this article we explain how the clean sheet bet works, the usual choices, and a few ways to be caught out. We are an independent guide, not KKFB, and we give no fixtures or tips.
What a clean sheet is
A clean sheet means a team did not concede a goal during the match. If the game finishes 2-0, the winning team has a clean sheet. If it finishes 1-1, neither does. A 0-0 draw is a clean sheet for both teams. The market asks about one team at a time, or both at once.
Typical clean sheet markets
The simplest version offers yes or no for a chosen team: will it keep a clean sheet? Some books also offer "win to nil", where a team must win and concede nothing. The reverse is "both teams to score", where each side finds the net at least once. Each is the mirror of another, which is why the prices are connected.
| Market | You win if | Related to |
|---|---|---|
| Team clean sheet: yes | That team concedes nothing | Opponent fails to score |
| Win to nil | That team wins and concedes nothing | Clean sheet plus win |
| Both teams to score: no | At least one team fails to score | Any clean sheet |
Details that matter
Own goals count as goals conceded by the team whose player scores them, so a clean sheet can disappear on an unlucky deflection. Penalties count like any other goal. Extra time is usually not counted. If the match is abandoned, the bet is often void unless a result is already certain. Read these details in the rules for the market, because they vary.
Do not read too much into past games
People like to say that a team has kept five clean sheets in a row, so they are "bound to" keep another. Football does not remember. Teams change, opponents change, and luck plays a part. Past games tell you something about a team's habits, but not enough to turn a bet into a sure thing. For other football markets, see the football betting page and the odds guide.
Match shapes that affect clean sheets
Some match situations make a clean sheet less likely. A team that goes behind early must attack, leaving gaps. A team protecting a lead may defend deeply, which can help. Red cards, injuries to goalkeepers and weather all play their part. None of this can be known before the match, which is why prices exist.
You may see commentary describing a team as defensively solid. It is a useful description, but it does not tell you what the other side will do. Treat it as colour and not as evidence.
If you are tempted to add clean sheet bets to several other bets on the same match, remember that they are connected. A single early goal can sink several bets at once.
Whatever you choose, keep your stake the same as you would for any other bet, and do not increase it because the idea feels solid or because a pundit sounded sure.
Keep it modest
Clean sheet bets feel safe, because they are about not losing something. They are as exposed to chance as any other. Stake small, write the amount down and stop at the end of the match. Our responsible gaming page lists signs that it is time to pause.

Your questions
What is a clean sheet?
It is when a team does not concede any goals in a match.
Does an own goal break a clean sheet?
Yes. An own goal counts as a goal conceded by the team of the player who scored it.
What is win to nil?
It is a bet that a team wins and concedes no goals. It is harder to hit than a simple clean sheet, so it pays more.
What if the match is abandoned?
Many books void the bet, but rules differ. Check the terms for the market on KKFB.
Does a strong defence make it certain?
No. A strong defence reduces the chance of conceding, but a single mistake can undo it. Bets can lose.
